Our story

From the founders’ Pittsburgh training work to Apprentage’s focus on connected apprenticeship programs.

Josh and Alan, co-founders

It started with teaching in Pittsburgh

Josh and Alan began building Turbine Workforce in early 2018 to deliver learn-to-code classes in Pittsburgh. They needed a browser-based way to support both in-person and online learning beyond class time.

As that work grew, they built tools to coordinate students, instructors, partners, and learning operations. Turbine was the name of that earlier platform and remains part of the history of this work.

Why Apprentage

Apprenticeship requires coordination beyond a course: sponsors set standards and oversee progression; apprentices document work, employer mentors review it, and instruction providers track learning. Apprentage focuses on the connected operating record for that work and for intermediary coordination and reporting.

We do not claim the original Pittsburgh classes were Apprentage programs. Their lesson was operational: learning only works at scale when the people delivering it can see what happened and what comes next.
