LLMs in apprenticeship recordkeeping: the 2023 exploration

What Turbine described in 2023

Josh Studl wrote in August 2023 about Turbine experimenting with language models, embeddings, and natural-language interfaces for registered apprenticeship records. The post presented an architecture direction; it was not a validation of automated compliance.

Its concrete example was VELA: an apprentice could describe a completed task aloud, a model could classify the transcription against work categories, and an OJT manager could review the proposed logbook entry. The 2023 review demonstration shows why human approval belongs in the workflow.

The original also proposed model-generated training plans and regulatory guidance. These were aspirations, not evidence that a model could register an apprentice, interpret every program standard correctly, or assure compliance.

What sponsors should require

A model suggestion is not a mentor sign-off. Start with approved occupation standards, preserve the apprentice's original account, allow corrections, and require an authorized reviewer to verify work before recording attainment.

For an Apprentage conversation today, ask how a real sponsor would handle an ambiguous entry, who can approve it, and how the decision is retained. Book a demo to inspect the current workflow rather than assuming every 2023 Turbine experiment shipped in Apprentage.
