From Turbine training to apprenticeship operations: a 2020 Pittsburgh interview

Dec 16, 2020 — by Josh Studl

From the Turbine Workforce archive. Historical organizations and product names describe the work at the time, not current Apprentage customer relationships.

In December 2020, Julia Mericle of the Pittsburgh Business Times interviewed Upstream Coding co-founder Josh Studl about Turbine and its collaboration with CCAC Workforce Development. This is a historical account, not an Apprentage customer announcement.

What the 2020 report described

Upstream Coding had built Turbine to house bootcamp curriculum and run its own programming, then identified an opportunity to support employee training and upskilling. Studl said Upstream began collaborating with CCAC Workforce in September 2020.

The report described plans for CCAC to run nearly all professional development courses on Turbine and for a joint tech-focused upskilling initiative to launch in January or February 2021. Those were plans as reported then, not evidence of a subsequent launch.

Why apprenticeship sponsors should care

A training partnership needs more than course delivery: sponsors must connect related instruction with work-based learning and retain records across partners. That distinction matters when assessing the scope of any workforce technology announcement.

Today, Apprentage focuses on apprenticeship program operations: coordinating related instruction and on-the-job training records for sponsors and intermediaries. The 2020 interview documents Turbine's training origins, not Apprentage's participation in that CCAC initiative.
